Excerpt from The Hearts of Man The writer was so fortunate as to have his MS. read, at his request, by Sir James Mackenzie and Professor Bayliss. These two great authorities were kind enough to offer certain criticisms, and he feels that he will do his readers the best service if he quotes from these, and endeavours to explain his position in terms of answers to them. Before doing this, however, he would like to explain the nature of the present book and the circumstances which caused it to be written. The prime object of the book is to encourage investigation into certain phenomena of the circulation and of the nervous system which have not hitherto been investigated from the purely clinical standpoint - for example, the relationship of the pulse to the respiration, the mechanism of breathing in effort and at rest, the meaning and effect upon the general circulation of the great "blood lakes" of the skin, abdomen, and lungs.
